PLATFORM
A platform, gives your ring that professional feel. You will need tools and some construction experience. Frames can be made of metal or wood. Metal frames have obvious advantages, but wood frames will cost less, and can be just as strong.

For sanctioned events, you need to check rules and regulations with the sanctioning body. If for training purposes only, it is up to you. If the platform is over 18" high, you will need stairs. The floor of the ring should extend 18" past the ropes.

CORNER POST
Corner posts are used to attach the ropes, and depending on your design, serve as supports for the platform. Most corner posts are square, but round is acceptable. If you built a metal frame, they should be incorporated into the design of the platform.

A major concern will be placements of the rope attachments. The bottom rope can be from 16"-18" from the platform. The top rope can be 52"-54" with the other ropes evenly spaced between. Most rope attachments are wielded on, but you could drill holes and use eye hooks. See USA BOXING TECHNICAL RULES for helpful information.

CANVAS
The floor of the ring, needs be completely covered with canvas or vinyl.

Canvas thickness, is measured by the ounce. 16 oz will last many years, but 18 oz is better. Grommets should be evenly spaced, a maximum 12". Custom designing the canvas with your logo is great, but is expensive. Also, check tent manufactures. Paint supply?

FOAM PADDING
Most padding comes in 1" thickness, but different sanctioning bodies require different thickness. It is usually best to order it through an established source. Some foam padding we bought, looked good, but with the sweat and hard use, didn't last too long. Use an electric knife to cut foam.

ROPE (4)
Most rings have 4 ropes, but 3 rope systems are usually acceptable. Rope is normally 1" manila.

ROPE COVER (4)
A rope cover prevents rope burn, a must have. Can be made with nylon, vinyl, misc. It is easiest to buy pre-made sets. Standard colors are red, white, or blue.

ROPE CLAMPS (16)
Four clamps per rope recommended. These are basic hose clamps that you can buy at any hardware or auto parts store for around $1. ROPE WITH CLAMPS

ROPE CLAMP COVER (4)

ROPE RETAINER RING (16)
These are metal loops. You thread the rope through them and attach to turnbuckle. Using rope retainer rings, gives the rope "That little play."

TURNBUCKLES (16)
Normally made from forged, galvanized steel with hook end fittings.

TURNBUCKLE COVERS (16)
Usually made of foam padding, with a covering secured by Velcro or zipper closure. For any kind of tournament or business use, you may be required to have turnbuckle covers. They are a safety feature and good to have Unless you have resources to make your own, it is easier to buy them.

CORNER CUSHIONS (4)
Essential for every ring, required for safety reasons. Give your ring that final touch with custom designed corner cushions. Most manufactures can make corner cushions with your design.

ROPE SPACERS
Mandatory for all rings. Keep proper spacing of the ropes. Mostly you see nylon straps with advertising on them. For the gym, you can use pieces of rope(1/4" Laundry line). see: ROPE SPACERS

RING SKIRT

RING APRON PADS
An extra safety feature.
