The Fight by Rounds

 Jack Sharkey weighed 201 pounds
and Primo Carnera tipped the beam
at 260 1/2 when they entered the ring
for their championship fight at the
Long Island City Bowl last night.
 The fight by rounds follows:

First Round

 Sharkey missed a right for the
head. Carnera ripped a right up-
percut to the jaw at close quarters.
Sharkey sent a sharp straight left
to the head. They sparred for some
moments at long range. Sharkey
rushed Carnera and the latter
threw the champion to one side.
Sharkey would have fallen if it were
not for the ropes. Carnera struck
two lefts to the face and Sharkey
rushed to pound the body with both
hands. Sharkey missed a left for
the head, slipped and nearly fell
headlong through the ropes. Car-
nera crashed a heavy right to the
jaw and missed a left to the body.
Sharkey was short with a left but
landed a hard right to the jaw.

Second Round

 Sharkey hooked a left to the body,
then clinched. Sharkey sent a
right to the mid-section, but took a
right to the jaw. Sharkey missed
a right to the head and they
clinched. Carnera stabbed a long
left to Sharkey's head, then Shar-
key whipped a hard right to the
jaw. The champion drove another
right, which landed high on Car-
nera's head. Carnera was short
with a right, but struck a left into
Sharkey's face. Carnera was short
with a left to the head and Sharkey
closed in to hold. The champion
dealt a right into Carnera's body
and the latter held.

Third Round

 Carnera landed two light lefts to
the face and Sharkey returned a
left to the body. Sharkey tried a
right to the body but was short.
Sharkey sent a right smash to the
jaw but Carnera fought back sav-
agely. Carnera was cautioned by
referee for failure to step back after
a clinch. Sharkey reached the body
with two lefts. Sharkey sent a left
hook to the face. Sharkey sent a
neat left hook to the body and
evaded Carnera's counter-lunge.
The Italian stopped a short right
to the head and Sharkey returned
a right to the mid-section.

Fourth Round

 Carnera jabbed a light left to the
head and clinched. Sharkey made
his way to close quarters and land-
ed a left and right to the body. At
long range the challenger sent a
hard straight left to the head.
Sharkey rushed Carnera but failed
to land, taking a right to the head
in his advance. Sharkey missed an
overhead right for the head and
Carnera returned a left and right
to the body. Carnera missed Shar-
key's jaw with a right and Sharkey
hooked a left to the body. The
champion grazed Carnera's jaw
with a right but the latter came
back with a hard right that forced
Sharkey to hold. Sharkey sent a
left uppercut to the body.

Fifth Round

 Sharkey was high with a right
to the head. Carnera sought to
advance but failed. Sharkey hooked
a left to the body and a right to
the jaw. Sharkey sent a left to
the body. Carnera bounced a hard
left off Sharkey's jaw, then head.
They traded long lefts to the head
before Carnera rushed Sharkey to
the ropes. The titleholder held.
Sharkey hooked a scorching right
to the jaw and shook Carnera. Car-
nera was short with a left to the
head and took a left to the jaw in
return. Sharkey grazed Carnera
with another right just as the bell
rang.

Sixth Round

 They exchanged long lefts to the
head, then clinched. Carnera sent
a left to the top of the head and
followed with a left to the body.
Sharkey missed a left and right to
the jaw and Carnera held. At close
quarters Carnera pounded Shar-
key's body and the champion re-
treated. While retreating Sharkey
slipped to the floor but arose im-
mediately. Carnera rocked Sharkey
with a left and right to the head.
At close range Carnera whipped
two long rights to the body. After
Sharkey missed a right to the jaw
Carnera crossed a hard right to the
jaw. Sharkey landed a right to the
jaw, but Carnera came back with
a right uppercut to the chin and
floored Sharkey for the full count.
The round went 2 minutes 27 sec-
onds.
