CLEVELAND, July 3. - Max
Schmeling, Champion, weighed 189
pounds for his title defense, while
W.L. (Young) Stribling, challenger,
scaled 186 1/2 pounds.
The referee was George Blake and
the judges were Larry Norrett and
John Alexander.
The round-by-round description of
the championship battle follows:
First Round
Stribling landed with left to the
head and followed with a long left to
the head. Schmeling rushed Strib-
ling, but the later danced quickly
out of range. Stribling landed two
fast lefts to the face and followed
with a left hook to the body. The
Southerner missed a long left to the
head. He then sent a right uppercut
to the German's head. Schmeling
landed a hard right to the jaw.
Schmeling's left eye was discolored
as they emerged from a clinch. The
champion landed repeated rights and
lefts to the head. Stribling landed
to Schmeling's head as the bell rang.
Second Round
Stribling landed a light left to the
kidneys as he closed in. Schmeling
attempted to reach Stribling's body,
but the latter held. Schmeling jabbed
a light left to the face. Stribling
missed a left lead to the head and
held. Stribling sent two lefts to the
face, then missed a heavy swing
to the body. Schmeling landed a
left hook to Stribling's head at close
quarters. Stribling sent a left to the
body and then held. Each missed a
long left swing to the head and they
clinched. Schmeling sent lefts and
rights to the body at close quarters,
but Stribling retaliated with a hard
right to the body just before the
round ended.
Third Round
Schmeling reached Stribling with a
light right to the head and Stribling
danced back. They sparred and then
Stribling shot a right to Schmeling's
jaw. Schmeling sent two straight
lefts to the head but took a right
to the body in return. Stribling
landed two good lefts to his head
and Schmeling closed in and pounded
Stribling with rights and lefts.
Stribling shot a right to the jaw.
Stribling sent Schmeling's head back
with a right uppercut to the chin
and Schmeling held. Stribling landed
again with a hard right to the jaw,
but Schmeling returned a left to the
head. They were clinching in Strib-
ling's corner at the bell.
Fourth Round
Stribling missed a right to the head
and then hooked a left and right to
the jaw. Schmeling was short with
a left hook and Stribling then sent
a hard right to the champions body.
Each landed a light left at long
range. Stribling crowded Schmeling
to the ropes. Schmeling again missed
a left hook to the jaw. Stribling
sent a right uppercut to Schmeling's
body. They clinched in the center of
the ring, trading rights and lefts to
the head. A right uppercut just
missed Schmeling's chin. Stribling
made his way to close quarters at
the bell.
Fifth Round
Stribling sent two stiff lefts to
Schmeling's face. The German re-
turned with a light left hook to the
jaw and two lefts to the body. Strib-
ling sent a hard right to Schmeling's
kidneys. They clinched in the cen-
ter of the ring. The Georgian rushed
but was unable to reach Schmeling.
Schmeling twisted Stribling halfway
out of the ring in a clinch. They
sparred cautiously at long range.
Stribling sent two lefts to the body
but received a right to the kidneys
in return. Stribling missed a left
to the head and Schmeling landed
a left to the jaw. The challenger
rushed the champion only to hold
when he got in close.
Sixth Round
Stribling put a left to the jaw.
Stribling missed a left to the head.
Stribling closed in but no damage
was done. Stribling wrestled the
German several seconds before he
stepped back. Schmeling shot a hard
right to the body and followed with
another hard right to the jaw. The
champion tore after his rival, only
to be met with a solid right to the
jaw. They clinched in Stribling's
corner. Schmeling sent a hard right
and made Stribling hold. Schmeling
landed a hard right to the jaw. Srib-
ling sent jolting rights to the head
and body. Schmeling drove a right
to the jaw.
Seventh Round
Schmeling reached the center of
the ring before Stribling arose from
his chair, but the champion waited
for him to come out. They traded
lefts and rights at close quarters.
Schmeling sent a hard right to the
kidneys. He missed a hard right to
the jaw. Stribling sent a hard right
to the jaw, then held. Schmeling
chopped a right to the face and
Stribling landed a left to the body
and a right to the head. Schmeling
landed two light lefts at close
range. Stribling shot back a right
to the jaw. Stribling's right eye was
cut and he closed in to hold the
champion until the referee pried
them apart. Schmeling reached
Stribling's nose with two long lefts
just before the bell.
Eighth Round
Stribling shot a left hook to the
head but Schmeling blocked it.
Schmeling sent a hard right to the
head and then was held by Stribling.
Schmeling quickly sent a hard left
to the head and a right to the body.
Stribling landed a hard left and right
to the head and Schmeling was short
with a left in return. Stribling
grazed Schmeling's chin with a long
right uppercut. Schmeling sent two
long lefts to Stribling's head and a
right to the body. They traded long
lefts to the jaw, then Stribling held
on. Schmeling landed a left to the
jaw and Stribling came back with a
hard right and left to the jaw. In
his own corner Stribling showered
Schmeling's body with lefts and
rights.
Ninth Round
Stribling landed two lefts and
followed with a left uppercut to the
body. At close quarters Stribling
landed a left and right to the body
and Schmeling sent back a right to
the jaw. Schmeling reached Strib-
ling's jaw with a heavy right chop
and then pounded Stribling's body.
Stribling curled his right around
Schmeling's neck and took a left
and right to the body. Stribling shot
a hard left at Schmeling's jaw, but
the latter blocked the punch and then
clinched. Schmeling landed two light
lefts to the head and Stribling re-
turned the attack with a short right
uppercut to the jaw. Stribling landed
a light left to the head at the bell.
Tenth Round
Schmeling touched Stribling's chin
with a light left and Stribling sought
close quarters where he held.
Schmeling shook Stribling with a
right to the jaw and followed with
a left to the body before taking a
right to the body in return. Schmel-
ing chopped a right to the jaw and
then sent a stiff left to the face.
Stribling missed a right and Schmel-
ing sent the Georgian back with a
right to the jaw. Schmeling landed
another right to the jaw and Strib-
ling held on tenaciously. Stribling
was groggy coming out of the clinch.
Schmeling sent a hard right to the
chin. The challenger was reeling
almost helplessly in the middle of
the ring as the bell rang.
Eleventh Round
Schmeling rushed to start the
round, but Stribling held. Schmel-
ing landed a left to the head, but
received a left and right to the jaw.
Schmeling sent a right to the head
and Stribling held. Schmeling meas-
ured Stribling and then crashed a
solid right to the jaw. He followed
with a hard right to the jaw while
Stribling held on. The champion
sent a hard left and two short rights
to Stribling's head. Schmeling then
sent a light left to the jaw and they
clinched. Stribling reached Schmel-
ing's body with a right uppercut and
then crowded the champion to the
ropes. Stribling landed a left to the
head and followed with two hard lefts
to the head as the round ended.
Twelfth Round
Stribling hooked a left to Schmel-
ing's jaw, Schmeling shot back a
straight right to the head and a right
to the body. Stribling sent three fast
lefts to the head and then received
a right to the jaw before clinching.
Schmeling chopped a left to Strib-
ling's nose, then followed with two
more lefts to the challengers body.
Stribling sent a right to Schmeling's
body, but Schmeling retaliated with
lefts and rights to the head and body.
Schmeling missed two rights to the
head but landed a light left to the
jaw. Stribling shot a right uppercut
to Schmeling's jaw, but Schmeling
sent back a right cross to the jaw
and belabored the Georgian with
heavy rights to the body.
Thirteenth Round
Stribling hooked a left to the body
and then twisted Schmeling around
in a clinch. Stribling shot a right
uppercut to the jaw and followed
with a left hook to the head. Schmel-
ing closed in and pounded the body
with lefts and rights. Stribling re-
turned a left to the jaw and then
missed a wide left swing. Stribling
sent a right to the jaw, but Schmel-
ing returned a heavy body fire.
Schmeling shot lefts and rights to
Stribling's jaw and forced the
challenger to hold. Schmeling stag-
gered Stribling with a left and right
to the jaw. Schmeling shot four fast
lefts and a right to Stribling's jaw
and the challenger held on.
Fourteenth Round
Stribling hooked a left to the jaw
and clinched. Stribling shot a left to
the body and head. The Southerner
swarmed over the champion with
feeble lefts and rights and Schmeling
sent back a hard left and right to
the jaw, forcing Stribling to reel.
Schmeling sent a long left to the
head and Stribling continued to hold.
Schmeling crashed a left to the jaw
and Stribling held Schmeling against
the ropes. Stribling landed a right
and a left to the jaw and missed a
right swing to the jaw. Schmeling
grazed Stribling's jaw with a right
uppercut. Schmeling pounded Strib-
ling's body steadily with both hands
until the bell.
Fifteenth Round
They shook hands at the bell.
Stribling missed a left to the head
and clinched. Stribling landed a
right uppercut to the jaw and
Schmeling shot a right to the body
before they clinched. They exchanged
rights to the jaw and Schmeling
sent a left and right to the jaw.
Stribling shook Schmeling with a
right uppercut to the jaw, but the
latter came back with a heavy right
swing to the chin. Stribling held on
and Referee Blake had to force them
apart. Schmeling dropped Stribling
with a right to the jaw for the count
of nine. Schmeling rushed Stribling
into a corner and the latter was
reeling helplessly in hi corner under
the force of lefts and rights to the
jaw when the referee intervened and
stopped the fight, raising Schmel-
ing's hand aloft as the signal of vic-
tory. The round lasted 2 minutes 46
seconds.
